Trip Essentials
Although the Milwaukee Urban Water Trail is not as remote as many popular water trail routes, the power and unpredictability of the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers, as well as Lake Michigan, should never be underestimated! It is important to plan ahead before launching. Be aware of water levels, potential hazards, and required and recommended portages before you head out! Here are other things to bring:
- Proper clothes for the weather, extra layers and extra dry clothes are also advisable
- Good water sandals or shoes
- Personal Floatation Device (PFD, aka lifejacket)
- A signal device or whistle
- Headlamp or other light–one white light is required at night for all watercraft
- Paddles (consider bringing an extra)
- Water Bottle
- Sunscreen
- Rain Gear
- Dry Bags/Storage Containers
- Cell phone and/or marine radio (especially if paddling Lake Michigan)
